Mentor Program and Lessons I have learned

The Mentor Program is designed to provide students with opportunities to learn about the world of work from a business professional through a one-on-one coaching and through opportunities to observe the workplace and develop networking contacts. The program is available for both undergraduate seniors and graduate students starting in the early September for summiting application.

During the time I participated in the Mentor Program, I had a chance to meet with the recruiter and CPA from the local accounting firm in Lake Oswego, Oregon. The great thing about the Mentor Program is mentors can provide insights into important aspects of career management such as resume writing, interviewing tips, networking skills and career choice. At the time I was interested in becoming a CPA, therefore I have learned what are the key points they are looking at in resume such as CPA eligibility. However, I have learned that many employers asked applicants to summit their cover letter along with resume. Most of the applicants have not been putting a fair amount of time into creating one like resume including myself. I have never known how extremely important is the cover letter until I had a chance to talk to the recruiter.

The recruiter said when they go through a hundred of applications daily during the hiring season; it is hard to identify the potential candidate when most resumes look similar especially for entry-level position. The job environment is highly competitive and since the resume does not tell much about you. The cover letter comes in handy and useful for the recruiter to get to know you better and why they should hire you!

Here are the reasons I have learned from the recruiter of why the cover letter is extremely important:

  1. Personality – The recruiter would like to get to know you a little better since you will be in the same team with them. Therefore, it is important for them to learn if you will be able to work as a team with them.
  2. Get to know you – The recruiter can use this cover letter to learn why you think you will be qualified for this position because there may be other qualifications you did not listed in the resume. A cover letter gives you a great chance for both you and employers to get to know each other better.
  3. Check communication skill – Since communication skill is very important for CPA candidate therefore the recruiter use the cover letter to check your grammar and communication skill.
